The City of Plano, Texas is located 20 miles north of downtown Dallas. The largest city in Collin County with a population of over 235,000, Plano is the home for leading information technology companies Electronic Data Systems and Perot Systems. Plano is also the U.S headquarters location for Swedish wireless telecom and equipment manufacturer Ericsson, and for Nortel Networks, the Canadian maker of telecom switching, wireless, and optical systems. In 1996, Plano was named the "Best City in the U.S. for Home-based Businesses" by Home Office Computing thanks to a strong telecommunications infrastructure and a dedication to small business development. Plano was named a 1994 All-America City by the National Civic League and Allstate Foundation. The City was named the 8th Safest City in the United States based on the most recent F.B.I. crime statistics, and is in Money magazine's listing of "America's Safest Places."
Plano Independent School District
Located approximately 20 miles north of downtown Dallas, the Plano Independent School District includes 59 schools with a total current enrollment of over 48,000 students. The administrative and teaching staff of Plano ISD are focused on achievement: the 2001 state accountability report by the Texas Education Agency listed 37 of the 59 Plano schools as “exemplary” schools, helping Plano ISD achieve “recognized” status for the second consecutive year. Located in the high-tech telecom corridor extending north of Dallas along US 75, it isn’t surprising that Plano ISD is implementing a $16 million private fiber-optic network linking all of the district’s 59 schools and seven service facilities — a first for a school district anywhere in the US.
Collin County Community College District
The Collin County Community College District includes 6 campuses in the cities of Plano, Allen, Frisco, Rockwall, and McKinney in north Texas. Academic courses in the arts and sciences are offered to prepare students for senior institutions; a variety of technical programs leading to associate degrees or certificates are offered as well. CCCCD offers a teacher certification program, and is the first community college in the nation to offer teacher certification for technology education. Continuing adult education programs provide opportunities for academic, professional, occupational, and cultural enhancement. CCCCD also provides conferencing facilities including conference rooms, classrooms, auditoriums, as well as on-site catering and A-V services.
City of Allen, Texas
A city of over 43,000 population located in Collin County in north Texas, Allen has experienced rapid growth in the past decade, more than doubling its population since the 1990 census. The original township was laid out in 1872 by a predecessor of the Southern Pacific railroad. With a population of only 400 citizens as recently as 1950, the construction of US 75 in 1960 began a period of growth for the city. The relocation of Developmental Learning Materials, an educational publisher, and InteCom, Inc. to Allen in the late 1980’s, led the way for further corporate relocations and business start-ups throughout the 1990’s, leading to continued strong growth.
